a request for advice

A few times at latitude i was sat out with a mug o cocoa at night time with a great view down the path towards the corner of the field we were camping in. On the last night it was slightly misty and as people walked past towards the light at the end of the path and the lights in the end of the tree I was keen to get a photo of these misty silhouette-ish characters strolling along the path.

As you can see from the effort i took on my mobile, the outcome wasn't up to much. Does anyone have any ideas about how i might go about planning this better next time i'm at a festival? I mean..in terms of lenses, settings (ISO, f stop et al) etc if i were to take a DSLR with me?
